Meeting the Need: Harrison County Crew Gives Families a Strong Start

Real Help for Real People

The event took place at the CASOMS Harrison County office in Gulfport, where staff and volunteers set up a drive through distribution under pop up tents in the parking lot. Families pulled up in their vehicles, and volunteers walked supplies directly to their cars. No long lines. No hassle. Just help, delivered with a smile.

For many of these families, the cost of school supplies is a real burden. Notebooks, pencils, folders, and a quality backpack can add up fast, especially for households with multiple children. By removing that financial pressure, Community Action gave parents one less thing to worry about and gave kids the confidence of walking into the first day of school fully prepared.

Prepared with Purpose

Each backpack was filled with supplies designed to help students walk into the classroom feeling ready. From pencils to notebooks, every item was chosen to lift a burden off a family's shoulders. This was not about handing out things. It was about helping children walk in with confidence on day one.

Lunches were thoughtfully prepared and served with care. For many families, that small act made a big difference. It was nourishment, relief, and kindness wrapped into one simple gesture. The team started early that morning, packing bags inside the community center before moving everything outdoors for the drive through distribution.

Volunteers Were the Engine

None of it would have been possible without the people who stood behind the scenes and worked the front lines. Volunteers showed up early, stayed late, and handled everything from packing bags and making sandwiches to directing traffic and greeting families with a smile.

They did more than complete tasks. They built an atmosphere of joy and service that every parent and child could feel. Several volunteers held up handmade signs with encouraging messages for the kids heading back to school: "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." "Believe in yourself." "Always show gratitude and live positively." Those signs were not decoration. They were the spirit of the entire day put into words.

More Than a One Day Effort

This event was one part of a much larger mission. At Community Action of South Mississippi, we believe real change starts with real action. That means stepping up when families need support and showing them that someone is always in their corner.

When we meet physical needs, we create space for emotional and spiritual growth. That is how communities move forward together. A child who walks into the first day of school with a full backpack and a full stomach is a child who can focus on learning instead of worrying about what they do not have. A parent who does not have to choose between school supplies and groceries can breathe a little easier. That ripple effect is what community action is all about.

CASOMS serves families across Jackson, Harrison, and George counties with programs ranging from Head Start and energy assistance to food pantry services and senior center programming.
